About the Stroop Effect

The Stroop effect demonstrates the interference that occurs when the brain tries to process conflicting information. When you see the word "RED" printed in blue ink, your brain automatically reads the word, creating conflict with the task of naming the ink color.

How It Works

Reading is a highly automated process — we do it without thinking. But when the word meaning conflicts with the visual information (the ink color), your brain needs extra time to resolve the conflict. This is why Stroop tasks are slower and more error-prone than simple color naming.

Why This Matters for Gaming

  • Information filtering: Ignore irrelevant UI elements during combat
  • Focus under pressure: Maintain concentration when multiple things compete for attention
  • Decision making: Choose the right action when conflicting inputs exist
